A Guide To Winter Lawn Care

We can all agree that winter is the period when we feel like we can take a break from lawn care. Although that’s true in some ways, you also don’t want to ignore your lawn completely. Taking care of your lawn during winter prepares it for a healthy comeback during spring.

So, if you’re looking for ways to care for your lawn during winter, this article is for you. It contains several winter lawn care tips for you to try.

Winter Lawn Care Tips

Give Your Lawn The Appropriate Prep

As winter rolls around, you want to ensure your lawn is ready for the cold. One of the ways to do this is by cutting your grass shorter to reduce the risk of disease. However, avoid cutting it too short so you don’t damage the roots. Another way to prepare your lawn is by aerating the soil in late fall. This provides adequate nutrients, water, and oxygen to your lawn, giving it a better chance at withstanding the cold. Also, you can apply winter-specific fertilizers that are rich in potassium to build cold-resistant roots.

Minimize Foot Traffic

On a normal day, we never really think about how much we use our lawns. But once winter comes, you might have to be more conscious about minimizing foot traffic. This is because grass is more vulnerable during winter and foot traffic only makes it worse. To avoid lawn damage, use markers to indicate pathways to steer people off your lawn.

Remove Snow & Ice

Even after preparing your lawn and reducing foot traffic, you still need to prevent snow buildup on your lawn while shoveling. Ice places so much weight on the grass that it leads to suffocation. You can also opt for lawn-friendly products like sand or calcium magnesium acetate to melt off ice from your walkways.

Fix Drainage Issues

As the snow melts, the excess water can cause waterlogging and root rot. So, ensure you address any possible drainage issues by cleaning gutters and redirecting water away from the yard. You might also want to identify areas where water gathers and address them before winter.

Be Mindful Of Lawn Diseases

During winter, your lawn is vulnerable to diseases like snow mold and fusarium patch. You can address these by raking lightly in early spring to prevent them from spreading. You can also carry out proper aeration and drainage.
