When Are Lawn Overseeding Services Necessary?

If you aren’t familiar with lawn overseeding and its usefulness, our landscaping experts can give you clarity! It’s a process that involves spreading grass seed over an existing lawn. Normally, grass seed is only applied to lawns that are in their earliest stages of development, but overseeding is used in more dire circumstances. It’s a service that is best performed in the fall in the Northeast, as the air is noticeably cooler, there are fewer weeds to deal with, and the soil is warm enough that nutrients are easily absorbed. If your lawn falls into any of the following categories, give our team a call to get these issues addressed!

  • Your lawn is looking weaker or thinner
  • You notice significant amounts of discolored patches
  • You want to introduce new types of grass to your lawn
  • Your lawn has suffered from insect or disease-related damage
  • Your lawn has suffered from drought-related stresses

When Can Slice Seeding Services Be Utilized?

Slice seeding is commonly referred to as slit seeding, but regardless of how you say it, it’s a fantastic service! It’s a foolproof technique that combines lawn aeration with planting grass seed. Small holes are dug into the grass, and grass seed is planted directly inside them to foster healthy growth and development. This is often performed using a slit seeding machine, and since the holes it generates are evenly spaced and intricate, the grass that grows as a result is much thicker than most. Slice seeding is often used in dire situations to bring lawns back from the point of no return. If your lawn falls into a category like these, give us a call for expert slice seeding:

  • You’re dealing with a lot of weeds on your lawn
  • Your lawn is over 70% dead or decaying
  • You want to completely renovate your lawn
  • Your lawn is located on a steep slope
  • You’re dealing with large barren patches on your lawn

Overseeding FAQ

When Is The Best Time To Overseed?

The best time to overseed your lawn in Massachusetts is during the early fall, roughly around the timeframe of mid-August to late September. The rain and changing climate associated with this period allow your grass to develop strong roots to survive the winter.

Getting your lawn prepped for overseeding involves clearing the area around it and ensuring that your grass is ready for the process. After clearing weeds, thatch, and other debris, mow your lawn low and collect the grass clippings. We’ll use a combination of aeration and watering to ensure that your lawn is prepped after we arrive.

Our team highly discourages this! Weed killers contain chemicals that stop sprouting, and they can even kill grass in special circumstances. If you need weed control, consider taking care of this first before thinking about overseeding.

There are two key indicators of when you’re able to mow again after overseeding. The first is time; you can typically mow 2 to 4 weeks after overseeding. You can also use your grass’s height as an indicator, with the benchmark around 3 to 4 inches in length.

Start by watering more aggressively and cut back as the weeks progress. Start with shorter and lighter watering cycles around 2 to 4 times per day, then cut back a cycle every two weeks until you return to your normal watering routine.
